Driftcart Setup Guide

From install to a working cart drawer, one step at a time.

What Driftcart does

Driftcart adds a slide-out cart drawer to your store. A shopper adds a product, the drawer opens, and they can change quantities, apply a discount code and go to Shopify's checkout without leaving the page.

This guide takes you from install to a working drawer. Follow it from top to bottom in one sitting.

Before you start

You need one thing: a theme built for Online Store 2.0. Most themes released in the last few years are, including Dawn.

Not sure? Open Online Store → Themes → Customize. If you see App embeds in the left sidebar, your theme is supported.

Install from the Shopify App Store

  1. Open Driftcart's listing in the Shopify App Store.
  2. Click Install and approve the permissions Shopify shows you.
  3. You land on the Driftcart dashboard. You start on the Free plan.

Turn on the Driftcart app embed

Do not skip this step. It is where most merchants get stuck. Until the embed is on, Driftcart cannot appear on your store.

  1. In your Shopify admin, click Online Store, then Themes.
  2. On your live theme, click Customize.
  3. In the left sidebar, click App embeds.
  4. Switch the Driftcart toggle on.
  5. Click Save in the top right.

Shortcut: the Troubleshooting section of the Driftcart dashboard has a button that opens the theme editor for you.

Confirm it is working

  1. Open your store as a shopper would. Use View your online store in the admin, or visit your store address.
  2. Open any product and click Add to cart.
  3. The Driftcart drawer should slide open with your product in it.

That is your first win. If the drawer did not open, refresh the page and try again, then jump to If something is not working.

Configure the basics

Open Driftcart in your Shopify admin and go to its settings page. Work down the page in order. Save when you are done, then add a product to the cart again to see your changes.

Drawer position

Choose where the drawer sits on the screen.

Auto-open

With this on, the drawer opens the moment a shopper adds a product. Turn it off if you would rather shoppers open it themselves from the cart icon.

Free shipping bar

Turn this on and enter the order amount that qualifies for free shipping. The drawer then shows shoppers how far they are from it as their cart changes.

Cart notes

Adds a note field to the drawer for gift messages or special instructions.

Discount field

Lets shoppers apply a discount code inside the drawer. If a code is not valid, the drawer tells them without sending them to checkout.

Go further with ProPro only

Everything above works on the Free plan. These features need Pro ($8.99/month). Skip this step until you are ready to upgrade.

Upsell rules

Pick products to offer inside the drawer and set the rules for when they appear.

Custom branding and fonts

Set your own colors and fonts, including Google Fonts, and remove the "Powered by Driftcart" badge.

Analytics

See how often the drawer opens, how often upsells are added, how discount codes are used and how often shoppers leave with the drawer open.

How to upgrade

Choose Pro on Shopify's plan page for Driftcart. Billing runs through Shopify, and Pro features unlock as soon as the plan is active.

Understand the Free plan's order cap

The Free plan covers up to 30 orders per month.

Once your store passes 30 orders in a month, the Driftcart drawer stops showing on your storefront. It comes back when you upgrade to Pro or when the new month starts and the count resets.

If your store ever cannot reach Driftcart's server, the drawer keeps showing rather than disappearing. You will not lose the drawer to a brief outage.

If you expect a busy month, upgrading before you reach 30 orders means shoppers never see a change.

If something is not working

The drawer does not appear

  • Check that the app embed is on and saved (Step 2). This is the cause most of the time.
  • Make sure you switched it on in the theme that is live.
  • On the Free plan, check whether you have passed 30 orders this month (Step 6).

The drawer appears twice, next to my theme's own cart

Many themes include their own cart drawer. Driftcart hides the common ones, but this works on a best-effort basis. Shopify has no single switch that turns off every theme's cart, so some themes will still show theirs. Email us your theme name and we will take a look.

The cart count in my header is slow to update

The count in your header is controlled by your theme, and it can lag a moment behind the drawer. If it never updates, email us with your theme name and what you added to the cart.
